14 Jul How to get your business featured in The Australian
We sat down with gadget guru Chris Griffith from The Australian as part of an Influencing webinar to get the lowdown on how to get PR coverage in The Australian.
Chris Griffith, technology reporter for The Australian is first and foremostly a tech expert having spent over 50 years in the Australian technology industry space. He contributes to The Australian with product reviews and technology news, alongside Technology Editor, David Swan.
You might have noticed that some news outlets have adopted a blog-style for delivering lots of information and lots of updates, like those used during Covid-19. This new style has proved to be very popular; generating enormous traffic, which is why this new format has been adopted across several subjects in The Australian, such as tech.
The new blog format means they can basically cover tech news as it’s happening. So for us publicists, while you might think a ‘feature’ is the best way forward, sometimes a blog piece can be just as good, because remember, the blog equals lots of eyeballs!
Keep in mind, journalists like Chris receive hundreds of emails overnight so it’s important to know what they’re interested in, how to pitch it and when to strike.
A few topics that have been popular recently include:
Big tech stories like Google and Facebook paying for news
Cryptocurrency and its fall from grace
Cybersecurity concerns like ransomware and company extortion
Tax, specifically the uniform tax regime for big tech and how it will play out
Technology used to be about laptops and phones, but technology is much broader and all-encompassing now so intelligent cookware or home fitness (virtual cycling) is all of interest especially when we are spending much more time at home!
Can you guess what was the most popular story in the last 6 months? The Victa autonomous lawnmower, of course!
Let’s face it; technology affects us all in one-way or another and they are keen to keep their readers updated about where technology is headed and showing innovation from the past.
Got something juicy that you want to pitch under embargo? The sooner the better! For the best chance of publication, pitch it with a week’s notice.
The best time to get in touch with Chris is in the morning. Grab a coffee and send your pitch his way – you might just land a feature!
